Neuroradiology

The Complex Operative Unit of Neuroradiology performs diagnostic and interventional activities in the pathology of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral (nerves), in the pathology of head, neck and spine.

Care activities

Neuroradiology at the ISNB uses a CT scan, two MRIs (1.5T and 3T) and a biplane digitial angiograph. Diagnostic CT/RM examinations are performed (also with anaesthesia assistance) of the cranium-brain, spine, basicranium-petrosal ribs, orbits, pituitary gland, facial massif and angio-CT, angio-RM and angiographic studies with arterial and venous catheterization of cerebral, neck and spinal vessels. The Neuroradiology Unit has a team dedicated to the study of paediatric and prenatal pathology (fetal MRI) with consultancy activities at the Ospedale Maggiore, the Policlinico Sant'Orsola and the Hospital of Imola. ISNB Neuroradiology manages a 24/7 on-call service for urgent and elective neuroradiological examinations carried out at other facilities of the Azienda USL of Bologna, Policlinico Sant'Orsola, Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli and Azienda USL of Imola. Interventional Neuroradiology includes outpatient neurovascular/spinal consultations and operations under general anaesthesia for embolisation of cerebral aneurysms, stenting of venous sinuses in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, vascular malformations both intracranial and spinal, and head and neck tumours, also in children. He performs percutaneous spinal ozone discolysis treatments and vertebral stabilisation (vertebroplasty) and participates in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke at the Maggiore Hospital.

Research activities

The research activity is focused on the study of neoplastic, inflammatory and demyelinating pathology of the central nervous system, haemorrhagic and ischaemic vascular pathology (aneurysms and strokes) and spinal pathology, with diagnostic and interventional neuroradiological techniques.
Each year, Neuroradiology organises specific training activities for doctors, radiologists, neuroradiologists and medical radiology technicians concerning the study of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as the investigation techniques dedicated to it.
