The Vascular and Emergency Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology Programme ensures the enhancement and integration of the neurosurgical activities of the Unit and of the Neurosurgery Unit, the related research and teaching activities, with particular regard to technological and care innovations.

Care activities

  • treatment of subarachnoid haemorrhage from ruptured intracranial aneurysm at OM with redefinition of the company PDTA and conclusion of the regionalisation process within the Regional Document on cerebrovascular pathology;
  • surgical treatment of cerebrovascular haemorrhagic pathologies (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural and/or pial fistulas) and other pathologies of neurosurgical interest in an emergency-urgent regime at the Maggiore Hospital with the reorganisation of the already active collaboration between the UOC of Neuroradiology OM, the UOC of Neurology and Metropolitan Stroke Network, the UOC of Resuscitation and Intensive Care and the UOC of Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurorehabilitation OM;
  • diagnosis and treatment of arteriovenous vascular malformations and complex intact cerebral aneurysms with redefinition of the organisational set-up to be developed in close collaboration with the OB and OM interventional neuroradiology team;
  • treatment and study of intracranial steno-occlusive pathology by means of extra-intracranial and intra-intra cranial bypass techniques by setting up a joint working group with vascular neurologists and OB and OM neuroradiologists;
  • review of the clinical care pathway and follow-up of the mild, moderate and severe head injury patient and the head injury patient register;
  • promotion of clinical research activities in the field of diagnosis and surgery of cerebrovascular diseases and mild, moderate and severe head trauma.

Research activities

The Vascular and Emergency Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology Programme provides research activities on the following topics:

  • new therapeutic and surgical strategies
  • development of innovative surgical instruments and monitoring for cerebrovascular surgery
  • validation and introduction of new biomedical materials
  • genetic studies on cerebrovascular pathologies (AVMs, cavernomas, aneurysms, Moyamoya disease)
  • research studies on subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • creation of a national and international network of highly specialised centres for the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases
  • organisational models for the management of mild to moderate and severe head trauma
