Complex operational unit - Director Roberto Piperno

The ISNB's Rehabilitation and Neurorehabilitation Medicine Unit deals with motor and cognitive disabilities resulting from brain and spinal injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. The Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurorehabilitation Unit develops rehabilitation pathways and projects for complex disabilities in highly specialised neurorehabilitation inpatient care and in the integrated outpatient pathways in the Bologna Metropolitan Area (PDTA).

Care activities

The UOC of Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurorehabilitation has two main lines of activity: the Cerebrovascular line, interconnected with the Stroke network, and the Neurotrauma line, interconnected with the Trauma network. The cerebrovascular line is part of the Stroke Pathway of the Bologna Metropolitan Area, while the neurotrauma line is part of the two inter-agency PDTAs for myelopathy and severe acquired brain injury.

The care units of the Complex Operative Unit are:

  1. Neurorehabilitation Unit "House of Awakenings" located in Bellaria Hospital.
  2. Semi-intensive rehabilitation unit with high rehabilitation value located in the Maggiore Hospital.
  3. Stroke rehabilitation unit located in the Maggiore Hospital.
  4. Day Hospital and Outpatient Department for Myelogenous Brain Injury, Severe Stroke and Parkinson's disease.

Research activities

The main lines of research of the Operational Unit are:

  • Consciousness disorders (DOCs);
  • Effectiveness of integrated rehabilitation paths;
  • Neurostimulation;
  • ele-neurorehabilitation;
  • Advanced technologies in neurorehabilitation (robotics; virtual reality; Brain Computer Interface);
  • Movement disorders in people with neurological disabilities;
  • Physical activity and adapted sport in neurological disabilities.
  • "Italian Psychometric Lab" (I-PsyLab), for the construction and validation of clinical and instrumental measures of functioning, included in the ERTG (European Rasch Teaching Group) network.
