Complex Operational Unit - Director Andrea Zini

The Neurology Unit and Metropolitan Stroke Network is the second level Stroke Centre in the metropolitan area of Bologna for the treatment of stroke. The Stroke Centre provides 24-hour reperfusion therapy in ischemic stroke (intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy) and the management of cerebral haemorrhages. The clinical-assistance activity is particularly intense also in relation to the role of nerve centre (HUB) of the metropolitan emergency system played by the Maggiore Hospital.

Care activities

The Neurology Complex Operative Unit and Metropolitan Stroke Network provides ordinary inpatient care, in the ward and in the Stroke Unit, neurological consultancy to the Emergency Department and to the entire Maggiore Hospital, as well as to the Emergency Departments of the San Giovanni in Persiceto, Porretta, Vergato and Bazzano Hospitals. It is the only neurology department in the metropolitan area with a 24-hour neurological ward and a double day watch on weekdays. Its clinical-assistance activities are addressed to the diagnosis and treatment of acute neurological diseases and in particular of cerebral stroke.
The day service and neurology outpatient clinics include the possibility of systemic infusion of immunoglobulins and steroids for various neurological pathologies, plasmapheresis at the Transfusion Centre of the Maggiore Hospital. Outpatient activity includes cerebrovascular outpatient clinics, TIA, juvenile stroke and stroke-associated monogenic diseases, post-urgent outpatient clinic, movement disorders, myasthenia gravis, neuromuscular and chronic polyneuropathies.
The Neurophysiology Service performs electroencephalography, EEG-NAP, video-EEG, electromyography and evoked potentials (sensory, visual and motor) examinations for inpatients and outpatients. The Neurosonology
Service (SINSEC certified) performs TSA and transcranial EcoColorDoppler examinations, including dx-sn shunt detection, contrast medium examinations, cerebral venous studies, cerebral parenchymography, vasospasm monitoring in ESA.

Research activities

Research activities, also in collaboration with other national and international centres, focus on:
• neurological emergencies and stroke,
• acute treatment of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke,
• neuroimaging (CT perfusion in particular),
• secondary prevention (antiplatelet and anticoagulants)
