Epilepsy programme

The Epilepsy Programme is the EpiCARE Centre, the ERN Reference Centre for Rare and Complex Epilepsies, and ensures the integration of clinical activities related to epilepsy, including diagnostic and therapeutic activities at levels 2 and 3 and complex neurosurgical procedures.

Care activities

The Epilepsy Programme guarantees outpatient activity with planned and urgent visits and admissions, admissions to UMIE (Intensive Epilepsy Monitoring Unit) for pre-surgical monitoring, consultations in wards and Intensive Care Units for patients with epilepsy problems. Resective surgery and neuromodulation (vagus nerve stimulation) and preparation of ketogenic diets in drug-resistant epilepsies.
In addition, outpatient clinics dedicated to epilepsy and pregnancy, child-adult transition, epileptic encephalopathies, post-surgery, genetic epilepsies are part of the Epilepsy Programme. Reference Centre for Rare and Complex Epilepsies of the ERN (EpiCare).

Research activities

The main lines of research of the epilepsy programme are:

The genetics of epilepsies

  • focal epilepsies (e.g. "Sleep-related Hypermotor Epilepsy" SHE, "Epilepsy with Auditory Features" - EAF) both genetic and genetic-structural, i.e. underlain by cortical malformations (focal cortical dysplasias).
  • myoclonic syndromes (Familial Autosomal dominant Myoclonus with Epilepsy; Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsies).
  • epileptic encephalopathies.

State of epileptic illness

  • epidemiological-pharmacological study (Stepper)

Drug-resistant epilepsies

  • EEG-fMRI, NCH candidate selection, PET, research into alternative therapies (new AED, VNS). Collaborations: Niguarda Hospitals of Milan, Nuclear Medicine Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital

Epilepsy and Pregnancy

  • Teratogenic effects of FAEs, epidemiology

Epilepsy and sleep

  • Differential diagnosis Parasomnias, paroxysmal phenomena in sleep.
