The ISNB is a Scientific Institute for Research and Treatment (IRCCS) recognised by the Ministry of Health in 2011.

Like all IRCCSs, the Institute of Neurological Sciences is a hospital of excellence that pursues mainly clinical and translational research, i.e. research aimed at therapeutic applications.

The main research topics are neurodegenerative diseases and movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, autonomic nervous system diseases and headache pain, sleep disorders and biological rhythms, epilepsy, as well as issues more closely related to neurosurgery and neuroradiology, such as transnasal endoscopic surgery techniques for the removal of pituitary tumours and new neuroimaging techniques.

Born from the integration of the structures of the Azienda USL of Bologna that dealt with neurological pathologies and the former University Neurological Clinic, today the ISNB is mainly located in Pavilion G of the Bellaria Hospital, but since its ministerial recognition, the development strategy of the ISNB has been characterised by a progressive development of the activities of the recognition disciplines in the metropolitan area.

In particular, at the Ospedale Maggiore site, the HUB for neurological vascular emergencies was consolidated with the establishment in 2018 of the Neurology OU and Metropolitan Stroke Network, which allowed the concentration of all stroke cases at the emergency department of the Ospedale Maggiore, already home to the Neuroradiology OM organisational unit that guarantees 24-hour neuroradiological diagnostics and endovascular therapy.
In October 2019, the subacute and chronic management of patients with strokes and other serious cerebral lesions was also taken over by the ISNB, thanks to the affiliation of Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurorehabilitation, while Children's Rehabilitation Medicine has been carrying out its activities at the Disability Centre in Corte Roncati since 2011. In November 2018, a project was launched for the Institute to take charge of adult neurological activities at the Bologna University Hospital with the establishment of the inter-company Neurological Clinic - Metropolitan Neurological Network NeuroMet unit. Finally, two Institute Programmes (Functional and Molecular Neuroimaging and Neuroradiology with High Complexity Techniques) were established in December 2019 with the mission of developing the most advanced high-field magnetic resonance neuroimaging methods. The centrality of the Institute has been recognised by the Emilia-Romagna Regional Council, which has identified it in the last two years as the regional reference centre for Epilepsy Surgery (July 2018), Pituitary Neurosurgery and Paediatric Neurosurgery (both in November 2019).
The Institute is also a centre for university teaching and continuing education for the health professions.
