OB Neurosurgery provides care for acute and chronic diseases of neurosurgical interest according to the criteria of appropriateness and specificity of interventions, coordinating the metropolitan network for neurosurgical care. The main activities are: day-hospital and ordinary hospitalization, outpatient care and surgical treatment of diseases of the central and peripheral adult nervous system.

Care activities

  • Neuro-oncological surgery: surgical treatment of malignant and benign tumours of the brain and spinal cord. Integration of functional neuroimaging methods (functional MRI and tractography) in pre-operative planning. Treatment of lesions in the critical area using the Awake Surgery technique. Use of neuronavigation. Image-guided surgery using intraoperative tracers (5-aminolevulinic acid) and ultrasound-guided resections using neuronavigation and contrast agents. Preservation of vascular structures by intraoperative microdoppler and videoangiography. Use of intraoperative monitoring (EEG, motor and somato-sensory evoked potentials). Brain mapping mediated by intraoperative electrical stimulation. Neuronavigated needle biopsies for deep lesions.
  • Neurovascular surgery: diagnosis and treatment of vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord. Cavernoma surgery, combined treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations, surgical and combined treatment of cerebral aneurysms, treatment of subarachnoid haemorrhage and complications (vasospasm, hydrocephalus), treatment of spontaneous intracerebral haematomas.
  • Functional Surgery: surgical treatment of movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, Essential Tremor, Dystonias) using deep brain stimulation (deep brain stimulation-DBS). Cortical stimulation in post-ictal deficits. Surgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (microvascular decompression, percutaneous approaches).
  • Epilepsy surgery: ablative surgery, recording/stimulation using depth electrodes. Vagal stimulation in drug-resistant epilepsy
  • Vertebral Surgery: Surgery of degenerative pathology of the cervical, dorsal and lumbar spine. Cranio-cervical junction surgery. Surgery of neoplastic lesions of the spine and spinal cord.
  • Peripheral nerve surgery: diagnosis and treatment of degenerative (Entrapment Syndromes), neoplastic and traumatic lesions of the Peripheral Nerves
  • Hydrocephalus: treatment by ventriculo-peritoneal shunt, ventriculo-atrial shunt, endoscopic treatment of acute and chronic adult hydrocephalus. Specialist outpatient clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic adult hydrocephalus.

Research activities

  • The integration of care and research activities has resulted in the formalisation of a number of PDTAs, such as PDTA for patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage.
  • At OB Neurosurgery, research is carried out in the fields of neuro-oncology, hydrocephalus, and neurovascular.
  • OB Neurosurgery regularly hosts a number of annual international events such as the Bellaria Neurovascular Conference and the International Hydrocephalus Course.
